PAINTBOARD FX SERIES
From this series of conversations the colorist will start to paint up what they understand the color script of the film will be. You start to work out the visual script for how your film will unfold artistically, establishing rules and boundaries and where you’ll break them for effect. They decide what their color pallete is for the film and they start assigning emotional values to colors in an effort to lend the visual narrative some sense of structure. Or what color represents the antagonist’s winning, or the protagonist’s success. They’ll study reference material, look at other films, start collecting ideas about what color “sad” is in this new film. They’ll talk about mood, story beats and the director will offer their vision of what they see in the story. You’ll have a painter (colorist) read through the script, sit and talk with the director and art director (or production designer) and figure out how the story unfolds. One of the things that happens early on is a color script. And if it’s a CG film, other supervisors will be involved to some degree as well. Meanwhile, a director and an art director or production designer are beginning the development of the look, feel, pace, flow of the film from these very early beginings. Creates an outline of how the story unfolds, perhaps even gets a first draft screenlay written. Other studios may vary the process some, but the general idea and goal is the same):Ī writer comes up with a story.
